The people of Savannah are looking for a leader; a messianic leader who could deliver them from the horrors of poverty, hunger and disease. They are looking for a ‘miracle worker’ who could put some meaning into their lives. Then arises an angry young man, who comes out to say,” I am the one you have been waiting for”. And when the crowd of mockers tells him to shut up, he rushes down to Fingesse, reaches for a loudspeaker, and declares, “ I am prepared to live and to die for my fatherland.”
Who is this common man with an uncommon dream? Who is this hungry-looking fellow who believes he could dry the tears of a miserable generation? Would he succeed in the face of hegemony and godfatherism?
The African Dream is a story of faith, determination and purpose. It is urgent, ambitious and unapologetically satirical.
Joseph Edoki has demonstrated through this well-researched and delicately knitted piece that creative writing could be used as a veritable tool for political, social and economic reforms. |
